Boca Raton History
Dating back to 1895, Boca Raton was originally named for its sharp, rocky waters and jagged inlet, which led to the name Boca de Ratones. With the growth and settlement of newcomers, carving out their own pieces of paradise and shaving off the rough exterior of the landscape, Boca Raton has gone from an establishment once frequented by the Pirate Blackbeard himself, to the luxury golf and country club municipality it is today.
A key landmark in Boca is the Boca Raton Resort and Club recently purchased by Michael Dell for nearly $1 billion. This ultra-luxurious hotel and the adjoining members-only Premier Club add to the history and portfolio that already includes five-star hotels in Hawaii and California.
Boca Raton is also the location and headquarters of IBM, which opened a large-scale manufacturing plant in the area to produce is System/.360 Model 20 computer. In December 1966, IBM announced its purchase of 550 acres west of what is now I95, south of Yamato Road and east of Military Trail. IBM was the first company to build an industrial site in the scrubland of the west. The original site eventually grew from 620,000 square feet to 3.6 million square feet in more than 40 buildings. Mizner's dream for Boca Raton called for creating the "world's most architecturally beautiful playground", which included miles of paved and landscape streets, premier golf courses, polo fields, elegant shopping villas and luxurious estates.
Several other resorts were constructed following Mizner's eclectic architectural plans including the Cloister Inn, Camino Real, Old Floresta, and not to be outdone by Palm Beach, for designer golf courses all in Boca Raton.
